"There is a passion for hunting something deeply implanted in the human breast." —Charles Dickens

"A photograph can be an instant of life captured for eternity that will never cease looking back at you." —Bridget Bardot

Sara Tecchia Roma New York is proud to present a curatorial project by photo specialist Joseph Kraeutler, including the works of Sarah Baley, Rachel Barrett, John Divola, Wyatt Gallery, Alexandre Orion, Christa Parravani, Angela Strassheim, Miroslav Tichy and Paolo Ventura.

"Photography as an art form," explains Kraeutler, "has been influenced—both inspired and restricted—by the artist's surroundings since the medium's creation. The photographer's vision is achieved by careful planning, but more importantly, by the artist's ability to wait for that perfect moment when everything comes together. When everything is in place, the photographer takes a shot, hoping to catch what he or she sees through the lens.

"The exhibition Hunter & Hunted is a study of the similarities between the roles of "hunter" and "hunted" and an attempt to explore the ways in which artists, consciously or unconsciously, touch on this theme in their work. The primitive instinct to capture a subject has haunted the human psyche throughout history. What was once a necessity for survival has evolved into modern forms of the hunt that can be experienced today in courtship, business, and warfare. Although these pursuits are not as directly connected with survival, people as modern hunters are still in search of the same basic needs: food, shelter, and reproduction. Photography aesthetically embodies this search."

Here we see Miroslav Tichy hunting down his unsuspecting models, John Divola pursuing the perfect image of himself pursued by canines, Paolo Ventura's constructed war scenes. With camera as their weapon of choice, they all hunt the perfect moment, the perfect victim for perpetuity.

Joseph Kraeutler is the Photo Specialist at Phillips de Pury.
