EXTENDED
Sears-Peyton Gallery is pleased to present the second solo exhibition of works by
Sarah Hinckley, opening May 11th and continuing through July 1st, 2006. There will be an opening reception for the artist on Thursday, May 11th, from 5-7pm.
Sarah Hinckley has been practicing Iyengar yoga for twenty-three years. The daily ritual of flowing through structured poses, pausing to realize the alignment of the body and breathing out the chatter of the mind is reflected in the energy of her brightly banded paintings.
Like the yoga she practices, structural alignment and precision are paramount to Hinckley's compositions. Hinckley finds freedom in the painted boundaries that she creates. Just as the asanas (poses) of yoga allow one to experience the body's potential through disciplined movements, Hinckley's painted bands allow her to explore the possibilities that can be found within a controlled framework. The pristinely flat, glossy surfaces of Hinckley's canvases are organically grown as the artist spends months applying silky washes of oil paint until each painting finds its essence.
Hinckley's s interest is in creating an extended dialogue with her work; one that is reflective of a period of time rather than just a moment. Her work is the contemporary offspring of sixties formalism, with a shared appreciation for color and line, but Hinckley goes beyond the formalist principles by bridging pure exploration of color with expressive content that is derived from nature.
Hinckley is a New York City artist who grew up on the shores of Cape Cod. The beaches and marshes on which she spent her formative years subtly emerge in her paintings as bands of color unfolding into tiers of earth, sea and sky. In Down Comes the Night (facing page), a mist of marine blue laps into a pool of oceanic green which lands on a seagrass plane. A dabbling of soft pink dots decorates the burgundy skies, revealing a hint of the human touch. Hinckley leaves traces of her presence in this way, highlighting the humanness of her paintings.
