Sears-Peyton Gallery is pleased to announce the third solo exhibition of works by Eugene Brodsky.
“Brodsky has a tradition of creating stories from the unknown. His characters always emerge from a shroud of mystery. In past works, he has found his characters in random videos from flea markets and in obscure vintage cartoons. In this body of work, Brodsky inadvertently draws upon more personal experiences, as these characters come from the artist’s travels both close to home and abroad. At times, the characters are literally grabbed off the city walls.
MAN WITH GUN AND TAIL is derived from a photograph Brodsky took of graffiti on a wall in Barcelona. Once this street character from Barcelona enters into Brodsky’s world though, its narrative is forever altered. Like a prehistoric relief of modern times, its frozen image is burned into the surface, and, in a strange twist of fate, long, red limbs emerge in the same frame and walk over him with complete indifference.
Brodsky gives his characters a new history through the image transfer process. The characters transform into energetic shadows of their origins once they are transferred onto Brodsky’s mix of silk and paper ground. Time slows down with HOSE SAN FRANCISCO, as we are presented with an homage to the ordinary. The elegance of the winding loops is echoed in the comfortable egg shape in which it finally rests. The black framing device makes it important and begs us to take notice.
The story you will find in these images changes with every read. The setting is transcontinental as we move from Barcelona to Paris to New York to San Francisco. The characters are both poignant and enigmatic. The plot is for you to create. -Kimberly Whinna
