The Scribed Process

Reception: March 13, 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

"Abstract calligraphic marks form the content of my work," says artist
Brandon Maupin. "The physical and visual aspects of mark making, rhythm, color, and pattern are what interest me."
A reception on March 13 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. will open a month-long exhibition of Maupin's works entitled "The Scribed Process" at Serrano Contemporary/Sonnet Gallery in Chelsea. The public is invited.
In 2004 while teaching art to "at risk" students, the FL-based artist discovered that by using writing as a form of drawing his students were able to overcome creative blocks and inhibitions, and express themselves in a visual language that was current and relevant to the reality of inner city life. "I began to apply some of the same concepts to my own work, and I experienced a breakthrough of my own creative inhibitions," Maupin says. "The result is this series of paintings."
For Maupin, the words served as simply a vehicle for the mark, and they quickly gave way to more elemental, abstract calligraphic marks. In this way, the subject matter of the work becomes the process of painting itself. "My paintings are abstract manifestations of their own creation," he says. In describing the process, he paraphrases Jackson Pollock: "When I am in my painting I am not aware of what I am doing. I have no fears of making changes [destroying the image] because the painting has a life of its own. I try to let it come through."
