Jeffrey Vaughn
Aspen Trees #10 (2006)
Explore the untouched natural beauty captured by Jeffrey Vaughn through his seemingly effortless use of light and texture. Vaughn's unwavering attention to detail flawlessly captures the hidden perfections discovered in nature. Whether peering into the bank of a river in the spring time when the leaves are illuminated with light, or sitting on the edge of a lake as the sun infiltrates the clouds and creates a mirror image against the water, Vaughn's work is truly on for the ages. Vaughn's paintings focus our attention on the simplistic pleasures of a moment in time and a place in nature.

Vaughn works from his own photographs that he then converts onto the canvas. While using his own highly evolved technique to highlight certain aspects of directional light, Vaughn is able to captive and enlighten his audience. Vaughn feels that the process of developing his pieces accompanies meaning. "In my case, I think meaning is tied to the process of creation in the sense that I am trying to portray what I see and experience in nature." It is through this process that imagination and personality so graciously collide, creating a perfect blend of realism in nature.

Vaughn is in many ways the best type of realist painter, for he uses the detail true to his original image as well as his own vision. It is in this way that he is able to enhance light and form in order to create an illusion of realism that transcends nature. In "Forest Snow", for example, the viewer can actually feel the calmness and quietude of the winter months. One can't help but feel as though they are standing in the painting, looking at the naked, snow covered branches and feeling the brisk, chilly air swoosh past their cheeks. "Aspen Trees #10," another impressive painting included in the show, excites in a different manner, with its vibrant colors and detailed rendition of trees brought to life by rich, spirited foliage and carefully considered brushstrokes. The paintings that Vaughn creates are as breathtaking as the actual places in nature from which he connects.

Vaughn believes that painters have the ability to look at nature in a new way and, by capturing that, they share their gift with the audience. He states, "I think that the tradition of landscape painting has discovered new ways of seeing nature. It is then that people in general begin to look at nature in these new ways. But, it is the result of painters seeing something new in the world and depicting it in paint." It is this desire to enlighten his viewer to the sensations created in an untouched natural environment that makes Vaughn's intense attention to detail come alive for his audience.
