Arturo Herrera 2006
October 21, 2006- November 25, 2006
Reception: October 21, 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
530 W 22nd St
Sikkema Jenkins & Co. is pleased to announce an exhibition of new works by
Arturo Herrera on view from October 21 to November 25, 2006.
Two illustrations, a old dwarf and a boy playing the accordion, are the source of Herrera’s fourth solo exhibition at Sikkema Jenkins & Co.
This new series of painted collages / cut-outs show the front and back of both characters. The frontal views were found “as is” in a generic coloring book. The rear views were done by a hired illustrator.
The characters, now larger than life, appear to multiply and metamorphose themselves, inviting and resisting obliteration within the painted field.
A pliability of meaning is played out through the ambiguity of figurative and abstract forms. These forms do not enforce a specific message. Instead, they address the fragmentation and recomposition of mass-cultural elements to explore the impact of the language of abstraction into the collective gaze.
Arturo Herrera has exhibited extensively throughout the US and Europe. A one-man show will open at Galerie Max Hetzler on November 25. Upcoming shows in 2007 include: Comic Abstraction at MoMA; and solo exhibitions at the IKON Gallery in Birmingham, UK; The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum, CT; and Kettles Yard in Cambridge, UK.
