Sikkema Jenkins & Co. is pleased to announce a solo exhibition of new work by Jan Henle, on view from September 8 – October 13.

For the past eight years Jan Henle has been working on a living sculpture near the town of Maricao in the mountains of southwest Puerto Rico. Sikkema Jenkins & Co. will be presenting large-scale film drawings, documentation, and film in the first exhibition related to this sculpture. Con el Mismo Amor, as with Henle's earlier work, focuses on the experience of bringing the sculpture into being, pushing further an attempt to live in harmony with nature, while drawing strength from an inner state of emptiness and clarity.

Although universal in breadth, Con el Mismo Amor is at the same time rooted in a Caribbean landscape and culture. Its realization was made possible by the jíbaros (Puerto Rican mountain men) who worked with Henle. Their intimate relationship with the land and knowledge of the old ways of farming made it possible to carve the three-acre sculpture in the bush using only hand tools. A combination of extreme calm, and the ability to work for long periods of time with no end in sight, has given us something most modern men would not contemplate attempting. Made on an abandoned coffee plantation, Con el Mismo Amor is being planted with indigenous hardwoods in a way that continues to maintain its sculptural space.

Born in 1948, Henle lived most of his life in St. Croix and is now working in Puerto Rico. His film drawings have been shown and are in the collections of major museums including The Metropolitan Museum of Art and The Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth. He has had solo exhibitions at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles.
