Leonardo Drew 2007
April 14, 2007- May 12, 2007
Reception: April 14, 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
530 W 22nd St
Sikkema Jenkins & Co. is pleased to announce a solo exhibition of new work by
Leonardo Drew, on view from April 14 to May 12.
Drew is known for his dynamic large-scale sculptural installations, which incorporate created, manipulated and found materials such as paper, cotton, children's toys, cast paper, rust and mud. On the one hand, Drew's sculptures can be seen as exercises in formalism rooted in the very experience of looking. On the other hand, these works explore memory through materiality, employing the detritus of human experience within our diverse histories.
In this exhibition Drew will present sculpture and installation as well a series of discrete framed works. A large portion of the main gallery will be transformed in a 3-wall sculpture installation, while one gallery will feature smaller-scaled framed maquette-like works.
Leonardo Drew has been making artwork since childhood, and first exhibited his work at the age of 13. He went on to attend the Parsons School of Design and received his BFA from the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and art in 1985. Since then, he has shown in a variety of institutions such as The Hirschhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC, the Royal Hibernian Academy in Dublin, Ireland, The Art Institute of Chicago, The Miami Art Museum, and the St. Louis Art Museum. He has also collaborated with the Merce Cunningham Dance Company, and has participated in artist residencies such as ArtPace, San Antonio and The Studio Museum of Harlem in New York City. He lives and works in San Antonio, Texas.
