Secret Americana
March 1, 2008- March 29, 2008
Reception: March 4, 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
530 W 22nd St
Sikkema Jenkins & Co. is pleased to announce an exhibition of new works by French artist
Jean-Michel Othoniel on view from March 1st through 29th, 2008.
Secret Americana, Othoniel’s debut solo-exhibition at the gallery, evokes an America of the artists imagination, with motifs and coloring inspired by the American West. For this exhibition, the artist’s well known grands colliers de verre (large glass necklaces) have transformed into “lassos” in combinations of red, blue, and clear glass.
The exhibition will also feature the work The Secret Happy End, for which the artist has elaborated upon an antique wagon, like those used by the Western pioneers, with his signature glass beads and metal sculptural elements. This archetypal memorial of the American past honors America’s pioneering spirit and serves as a reminder of the continued migrations of people to and within the United States.
The installation piece Black Heart, Red Tears, first realized in Tacoma, Washington, while Othoniel was a visiting artist at The Museum of Glass in 2007, will also be included in the exhibition. This work was born of the artist’s travels to New Orleans in 2001 and 2003. Images of carnival necklaces hanging from tree branches, costumes of the Mardi Gras Indians, and accoutrement of the Zulu and other Mardi Gras Krewes combine in the imagination of the artist resulting in an elaborate work of hanging glass beads.
Jean-Michel Othoniel was born in Saint-Etienne, Loire, France in 1964 and studied at the French Academy at Villa Medici in Rome. He has had solo exhibitions at prestigious museums such as the Cartier Foundation for Contemporary Art, Paris, France; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Miami, FL; and the Peggy Guggenheim Museum, Venice, Italy. In 2007 Othoniel participated in the 10th International Istanbul Biennial in Turkey. At that same year’s Art Basel Miami, the artist premiered Le Coffre à Secrets, a limited edition artwork commissioned by Hennessy to celebrate the centenary of the birth of Kilian Hennessy.
Coinciding with his exhibition at Sikkema Jenkins & Co., Othoniel will also have a show entitled Dairy of Happiness at Galerie Emmanuel Perrotin, Miami, on view from March 8th through April 15th.
