Witness (2008)

Sikkema Jenkins & Co. is pleased to announce an exhibition of new works by Saint Clair Cemin on view from May 8th through June 7th.

Cemin’s sculptural oeuvre is marked by its variety. The artist masterfully works in a wide range of materials, techniques, sizes, and styles. There is great emotion and intelligence, a sense of history and immediacy in his art; but it does not come at the expense of humanity, vision, and a brilliant sense of humor.

Witness, the artist’s second solo-exhibition with the gallery, is an exploration of philosophical issues in tridimensional volume. The sculptures are not meant to give answers, but offer new vistas or perspective - in the form of symbolic figures and visual allegory - to view the universal philosophic issues which are suggested by the title of each piece. The exhibition represents the translation of the universal into the particular that can only be done in art.

Born and raised in the rural town of Cruz Alta in Brazil, Cemin went on to study at the Ecol Nationale Superior des Beaux-Arts in Paris. His work has been exhibited widely throughout the United States as well as abroad and is included in the collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; Fonds National d’Art Contemporain, Paris, France; Rooseum, Stockholm, Sweden; and the Musesum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, among many others. Cemin currently lives and works in New York and Berlin.

A newly published catalogue of recent work by Saint Clair Cemin will be available at the gallery.
