Haim Steinbach: New Works
April 28, 2007- June 30, 2007
Reception: April 28, 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm
536 W 22nd St
Haim Steinbach’s art is based on the selection and arrangement of existing objects. The objects are positioned as if they were staged, arranged like notes in a musical score or like words in a sentence. An arrangement of objects whether conscious or not always tells a story. In
Haim Steinbach’s works, the choice of objects and their grouping reflects their typological affinities and metonymic relationships.
Objects are conceived to serve functions that range from the utilitarian to the psychological, and the fact that there are so many kinds and types of objects of the same category makes it obvious that the personification of objects is a fact of life.
With the recent condition of globalization, the encounter of objects in unexpected contexts and relationships attests to an experience that transcends history. Historical contradictions, psychological projections and visual relations are aspects of the imagination where chance encounter is the norm.
At
Sonnabend Gallery,
Haim Steinbach presents ten new works that use a toy for dogs, a rubber chew, as a connecting thread. When standing upright, the dog chew takes on an architectural presence reminiscent of a pagoda – or even of a modernist form like a sculpture by Brancusi or Arp. When not, it seems to lose its balance and it swirls and wiggles about. The rubber dog chew is a marker of time taking its place as a colon, comma or period.
