McDarrah: Artists and Writers of the 60s and 70s will present over 100 vintage photographs from the incomparable archive of one of New York’s best known but least understood photographers. It is the first ever gallery exhibition surveying McDarrah’s work, and the first exhibition ever curated from his entire archive of published and never-before-seen prints. This exhibition celebrates Fred’s 80th birthday.
Fred W. McDarrah was the primary photographer and picture editor at The Village Voice during that newspaper’s first thirty years (and he is still with The Voice as Consulting Picture Editor). McDarrah was the eyes of The Voice. His pictures were the graphic expression of the United States’ first, largest and most spirited alternative weekly as it recorded -- and helped create -- the most vibrant decades of the greatest city in the world. Besides his work for The Voice, McDarrah also photographed for his own book projects, starting with The Beat Scene, 1960, and The Artist’s World in Pictures, 1961, followed by more than a dozen other profusely illustrated books. His in-depth knowledge and passion for New York’s overlapping art, writing, music, and theater scenes are the foundations of this exhibition.
The show features rare vintage prints of iconic images of our time, such as Andy Warhol at Stable Gallery with Brillo Boxes, April 24, 1964 (the opening image in Ric Burn’s recent Warhol film); Allen Ginsberg in 5th Avenue Peace Demonstration to End the War in Vietnam, March 26, 1966 (the cover image of Sotheby’s Allen Ginsberg auction); and Susan Sontag Being Arrested at Whitehall Induction Station Demonstration, December 5, 1967.
Newly discovered and unpublished vintage prints are also featured, such as Frank O'Hara and Others at Cedar Tavern Closing, March 30, 1963; and Duchamp with Cage and Cunningham; David Smith Supervising the Installation of his Sculpture into Marlborough Gallery, October 17, 1964; and Mark di Suvero at Open Hearing Against MoMA, SVA, April 10, 1969.
McDarrah’s photographs offer unsurpassed coverage of both downtown and uptown New York seen by one of the city’s most curious, knowledgeable, and indefatigable chroniclers. McDarrah’s prints have been collected in depth by the J. Paul Getty Museum and the National Portrait Gallery, Washington. His work is in numerous public and private collections.
