Stux Gallery presents Ricochet: The Prodigal Daughter, new works by Margaret Evangeline. Evangeline, a New Orleans native, culls her visual and conceptual language from a wide array of sources. At once referencing the complete upheaval of post Katrina New Orleans by shooting through stainless steel “canvasses” with a shotgun, she makes her mark on these reflective surfaces. The gunshot lends urgency to the message, an attempt to avoid the natural stream of compulsive or rational thought, adding an element of rawness to the "painting without paint." Margaret continues to utilize various guns and ammunition, but now sets her sights on the feminization of “cold” modernistic sensibilities, invoking perhaps the ghost of Agnes Martin, by quoting both the works of Donald Judd and Dan Flavin, adding an element of local New Orleans light.

In addition to new large-scale sculptures and paintings, Evangeline will present a new performance artwork. Drawing on the rhythms of New Orleans, Evangeline, accompanied by Leonard Sullivan, a professional tap dancer, will complement the rhythmic “dance macabre” created by the tap shoes with the sound of a Starters Pistol aimed at the ceiling. Calling on minimalist codes in the tradition of John Cage, the Starter Pistol’s sound is meant to act as a transformative element. This gut wrenching loud report signals and punctuates the percussive actions of the dancer, choreographed by Bill Castellino, on the gallery's steel and concrete floor. It acts as the catalyst that empowers feelings to directly inform the body, bypassing rational thinking. As a starting pistol is used to trigger animal instinct at races, here it is used as an engine that starts the creative process, breaking the tyranny of rational thought.

Margaret Evangeline is the recipient of numerous awards including the Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant, 2001, and a New York Foundation for the Arts Grant, 1996. Evangeline's work has received wide coverage in publications such as Art in America, The New York Times, The New York Post, The Chicago Tribune, Art Newspaper, and ArtNews. Her work has been exhibited in individual and group context such as The Drawing Center, Art in General, Delaware Center for Contemporary Art, Palm Beach ICA, the Hafnarborg, Reykjavik, Iceland and the Taipei Museum in Taiwan. Margaret was recently featured in a solo exhibition at the Paul and Lulu Hilliard University Art Museum in Louisiana.
