In conjunction with Colors, Gallery II features a selection of works by Italian artist Ercole Monti. An opening cocktail reception will be held the evening of July 26, 2007 from 6:30 – 8:30PM. The exhibition concludes September 15th, 2007.

Abandoning representation in search for transcendence, artist, poet and Tantric guru Sohan Qadri is known for his works of ink and dye on paper, which he creates with luminous colors that recall the lush palette of India. Raised part Hindu, and part Sikh, the artist was also involved with Sufism. His art is informed by this spiritual journey, particularly by his practices as a Vajrayana Buddhist and Yogi. His paintings are monochromatic surfaces with striations that convey rhythmic expressions of color energies. The art critic and scholar Donald Kuspit wrote of Qadri, “he is the pre-eminent aesthetic mystic of modernism.” Born in Punjab, India in 1932, Qadri has resided in Copenhagen, Denmark for almost thirty years. He has had over 50 exhibitions across the United States, Europe, Asia and Africa.

In her works on canvas, board, or paper, Susan Weil allows the viewer’s eye to contemplate a series of moments and perspectives at once. Through processes of cutting, crumpling and refiguring her compositions, Susan Weil’s mixed-media works address the transitory quality of time and space. She has influenced many in the Abstract Expressionist movement- including her ex-husband, Robert Rauschenberg, with whom she collaborated on many projects, most notably the Blueprint paintings of 1950. Susan Weil’s work is in many major museum collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, New York; The Museum Of Modern Art, New York, New York; the Victoria and Albert Museum, London; and the J. Paul Getty Museum, Malibu, CA.

Gallery II will feature selected works by Italian artist Ercole Monti. Born in Rome, in 1927, Monti has exhibited at the European Academy for the Arts in London, the Refettorio delle Stelline Gallery in Milan, the Querini Stampalia Foundation in Venice and at the XIII Quadriennale in Rome. His works of oil on paper hover between the abstract and the representational. As an architect, Monti was deeply affected by his meeting many eminent architects of his time, including Aalto, Scarpa and Rietveld and had exposure to the architectural theories of Frank Lloyd Wright. These individuals as well as the friendships he formed with the painters at the Scuola Romana had a direct influence on his paintings. Monti’s soft washes of textural color play over frameworks of scratched narrow lines depicting the urban landscapes of Rome, Paris, and Venice, as well as their surrounding geography.
