Macrae Semans

For his first solo exhibition Los Angeles based artist MACRAE SEMANS takes a smart, playful approach to formal sculpture, that results in curiously animated abstract objects made from found and constructed elements.

A steel rod, perhaps once part of a display rack, rises from its stubby feet in a graceful contrapposto like a long neck in an elegant portrait. Flat against the wall at the floor, filing cabinet steel is folded into a flattened mountain range of crags and crevasses and mysteriously powdered with metallic spray paint. Some repurposed galvanized steel makes an unholy alliance with slabs of Plexiglas, creating something between a coffee table and a Donald Judd--comedic and mildly reverent. Wall-mounted wooden pieces come off like metastasizing picture frames that overtook their images both in space and complexity in a confident display of materiality. A slender antenna of steel balanced against the wall supports a Kentucky-shaped chunk of concrete, its cracks filled with, and highlighted by, a translucent glossy glaze.

Deceptively simple, these seemingly off-handed gestures imbue mundane materials and strategies of display with a humanizing theatricality that complicates the formalism of the Modernist tradition without dismissing its lessons.

A 2005 graduate of UCLA's MFA program, Semans has been included in group exhibitions at Taxter & Spengemann and at Champion Fine Arts and The Hayworth Gallery in Los Angeles.

Art Reviews of Macrae Semans 2006

New York Times
February 24, 2006
Roberta Smith"The sculptures with which Macrae Semans, a young artist from Los Angeles, is making his promising New York debut are carefully worked-out vortexes of abject and elegant, found and made, laced with asides to the history of art and design...."
