Dive from Normal is the final MFA Thesis Exhibition for eight Montclair State University graduates. Their work, consisting of painting, sculpture, drawing, photography and installation, will be exhibited at
The Annex (White Box) Gallery in Chelsea for four weeks. The eight artists have pursued multi-disciplinary interests for the past two years in individual studios and in communal workspaces located on the campus of Montclair State University in Upper Montclair, New Jersey. Curating the show is visiting MFA critic-in-residence and editor-in-chief of the CAA Art Journal, Patricia C. Phillips. Professor Phillips pointedly describes the MFA experience in her essay written for the MFA exhibition catalogue: “Since September 2006, I have had the absorbing and challenging pleasure of trying to ‘work better’ with these smart and searching MFA artists/students. We have talked about ideas in art, the roles of artists as agents and intellectuals, and shared and struggled together with our individual convictions and doubts… I am confident that they have discovered, here in the MFA program at Montclair, ‘how to work better.’”
The exhibiting graduates are
Jamie Evans,
Martha Kelshaw,
Sam Knapp,
Ahni Kruger,
Saraivy Orench Reinat,
Janet Rente,
Elizabeth Sowell-Zak, and
Linda Talaga.
The exhibition runs from May 8 through May 31st, 2007. The opening reception is Thursday, May 10th from 6 to 9pm. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday 11 to 6pm . The gallery is located at 601 West 26th Street, Suite 1425 at 11th Avenue. For further information or directions please call the gallery at 646.638.3785.
