Petri Dishes
February 1, 2008- February 15, 2008
Reception: February 1, 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm
601 W 26th St
THE ANNEX hosted by WHITE BOX and HiArt Gallery are pleased to present:
Petri Dishes explores the fertile tensions that exist between mimetic impulse and pure innovation in the works of emerging and established artists from New York, Los Angeles, Seattle, Maui, Berlin and Paris. In each of the works, varied applications of saturated color, form and sound spin a thread between the intensity of childhood experience and the complexity of systemic adulthood. Continuity leads to contrast: Petri Dishes offers a heterogeneous array of works which cross stylistic and material boundaries.
Petri Dishes will donate proceeds from works sold to The TIME IN Children's Arts Initiative, a visionary arts outreach initiative born from the conviction that self-motivated children grow not from "time outs" in underserved classrooms, but from "time in" the world around them. This year, thanks to generous support, seven First Grade, Kindergarten and Pre-K classes from PS 241 and 242 in Harlem spend a full half day - every week for the entire school year - either plunged into a hands- on exploration of music and art at the HiArt! studio in Chelsea, or immersed in contemporary art at museums and galleries throughout the city. The TIME IN Children's Arts Initiative is a sponsored project of the New York Foundation for the Arts.
