Drawn Together features the following eight artists that explore the possibilities of drawing:
Mark Bradford,
Dan Fischer,
Ewan Gibbs,
Jim Hodges,
Ellsworth Kelly,
Brice Marden,
Richard Phillips,
Charles Ray
Dan Fischer aptly captures the relevance and the nature of the process in his reflection on the medium: “Throughout my life I have always thought of myself as a "drawer". I feel a true intimacy with the subjects of my drawings because of the rigorous, technical process involved. Through this method of working, the obsessive rendering and care of the paper's surface, I find that the sensitive touch of pencil to page helps further express the passionate connection I feel towards the imagery chosen. Intimacy is a most vital concept.”
Though the works represent a range of technique as well as subject matter, many have unique points of intersection. The 1948 self-portrait by
Ellsworth Kelly can be viewed by itself or in the relation to the series of detailed artist-portraits by
Dan Fischer.
Jim Hodges sculptural approach to creating flowers seems to magically absorb parts of both the abstract color-block collage by
Ellsworth Kelly and the sweet but masterfully drawn flower Kelly only recently completed. These associations and others in the show unfold and ultimately highlight the undoubted presence and depth of a work on paper.
