The Double
March 14, 2008 - April 26, 2008
Reception: March 14, 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
512 W 19th St
Curated by Matthew Lyons
Mika Tajima's newly commissioned installation constructs a kind of sequestered, phantom performance space borrowing imagery and references from various archival sources ranging from Herman Miller's office furniture system from the late 1960s to the 1970 cult film Performance. Interested in the given roles and multiple functions at play in performance as well as Modernist aesthetic tropes, Tajima creates sculptural sites for potential actions which also become surrogates for absent performers.
Exhibition Hours: Tue-Fri, 12-6pm; Sat 11-6pm FREE
This exhibition is made possible with generous support from The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, the Dedalus Foundation, Inc., Elizabeth Dee Gallery, The Greenwall Foundation, and with public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs and the New York State Council on the Arts, a state agency.
