Nicola Durvasula, Tejal Shah
March 23, 2007- April 21, 2007
Reception: March 23, 6:00 pm - 8:30 pm
526 W 26th St
In this exciting exhibition,
Nicola Durvasula expands her already eclectic style of drawing to include a month-long performance in which a wall piece is perpetually altered. Casting a light on the complexity of her processes, the time based nature of this work belies the isolated and stable appearance of her individual pieces. Durvasula occupies a complex position in her work between painting and drawing, East and West, fine arts and popular culture. Humor and material delicacy here mixes with subtle eroticism in a never completed search for finality. Her work has been exhibited with important venues in India such as Gallery Chemould and Sakshi Gallery, both in Bombay, and with public and private venues in Europe and the U.S. Most recently her work was included in Lila/Play: Contemporary Miniatures and New Art from South Asia, Victoria, Australia.
Continuing her work with the Hijra (transgendered), the Bombay-based artist
Tejal Shah presents to us a selection of large scale photographs which elaborate the fantasies of individual members of this community. Ranging from the desire for children to inventive and complex Gardens of Eden, these dreamscapes reveal the unique consciousness of it's subjects while playing with traditional Indian popular and fine art motifs. This presentation follows Shah's critically well received solo debut at the gallery in June, 2006.
