Tina Kim Gallery is pleased to present YEONDOO JUNG: LOCATIONS as the inaugural show in its new location in the Chelsea Arts Tower. This exhibition includes photographs from the artist’s acclaimed Location Series (2005 – 2007) as well as two conceptually related films.
Recipient of the prestigious 2007 Artist of the Year award given by the National Museum of Contemporary Art in Seoul, Jung approaches photographic practice from a painterly perspective. Finding strict documentary photography limiting and digital manipulation deceitful, he utilizes old-fashioned prop making techniques and scenery construction to create landscapes that are to his own specifications. The result is the vivid and striking Location Series. By juxtaposing artificial and natural elements, he creates stage sets that are both grounded in reality and entirely divorced from it. A sense of nostalgia permeates these photographs; it is as if they are one scene from the narrative of an Old Hollywood film or a faded remembrance.
From a constructed wooden stage perched on the precipice of a mountain to sunbathers on a beach whose shore break recedes into the Manhattan skyline, Jung authors images that are open to many readings. Influenced by past eras and the effective role of a theatrical stage, the works noticeably combine painted backdrops, curtains, and props to realize vague finales.
In addition, Jung will show two films: Documentary Nostalgia (2007) and Neighborhoods (2006 – 07). In the first, actually shot in one 85-minute take and described as a ‘moving photograph,’ the sets that would usually be motionless change in front of our eyes into six different ones, complete with a moving crew outfitted in neon orange jumpers. Any mystery that may have existed about the construction of the artist’s sets is removed, to expose the laborious thought behind the production of his works.
Neighborhoods, a work inspired by the diverse ethnic communities of New York City, was shot in Fall 2006, during Jung’s residency with the International Studio and Curatorial Program. In the 15-minute film, individuals from different neighborhoods speak about their own distinct experience. Like characters in a play, they are creations of the environments they have shaped.
The Location Series is currently also on view at Savannah College of Art and Design’s Atlanta exhibition space, ACA Gallery, and will travel to Red Gallery in Savannah.
Recently, Jung’s work has been featured in Time Out New York, Art Asia Pacific, and Contemporary Magazine. He was included in Vitamin Ph, Phaidon’s 2006 survey of prominent young photographers. A full-color catalogue for this exhibition is available through
Tina Kim Gallery in conjunction with the National Museum of Contemporary Art, Seoul.
Jung was born in 1969 in Jinju, South Korea. He studied in Seoul and the UK, graduating with his MFA from Goldsmiths College, London University in 1997. His work has been included in the Taipei Biennial (2006), Venice Biennale (2005), Gwangju Biennial (2004, 2006), the Istanbul Biennial (2003), and the Liverpool Biennial (2004). In addition to several successful solo exhibitions in Europe, Asia and the United States, he has also been invited to give talks at several prestigious museums and universities. Most recently, he participated in an artist’s panel at the Tate Modern on new Asian photography.
