526 W 26th StVirgil de Voldere Gallery (F.k.a. SlingShot Project) is pleased to announce an exhibition of new paintings by American artist David Palmer.
David Palmer’s paintings are made by one single stroke of electric blue acrylic paint on a perfectly pure white painted dark linen canvas. Each painting is a square of 64 x 64 inches, scaled in relation to how far Palmer’s arm can stretch. Palmer uses religiously the same artificial acid blue color revolving in a continuous flow reaching the edges of the canvas without ever revealing where it started or ended. This very formal set of rules have given Palmer the possibility to embark in a journey that challenges the tradition of American abstract painting.
In this new series of painting Palmer hides the beginning and the end of the process with even greater complexity. Palmer deliberately switches the debate from the dramatic spatters of the abstract expressionists to the flowing energy that spin in his flawless abstract infinite forms. Drawing the attention away from the surface of the canvas, Palmer's continuous form in perspective invite the viewer to enter the world of virtual imagery. The encounter of the traditional single stroke painting technique with an artificial independent three-dimensional form opens new formal and conceptual territories to the history and the theory of abstract art.
David Palmer had previously exhibited his works at the Museum of Fine arts in Boston and at the Rose Art Museum Brandeis University in Waltham. It is his second solo show with Virgil de Voldére Gallery (F.k.a. Slingshot Project).
