The
Yancey Richardson Gallery is pleased to present Harvest, an exhibition of drawings by Boston-based artist
Rachel Perry Welty. The exhibition includes several paper-based works and one large-scale wall drawing.
Known for using the detritus of her family's life to address issues of consumption, commerce and domestic routine, Welty here presents a series of drawings made from fruit stickers which she obsessively collects, slices and lays down, one sliver at a time, to form elliptical shapes suggestive of produce. The resulting brightly colored linear abstractions combine conceptualism with process art to record Welty's family's cycle of consumption. As she states, "We shop, eat, sleep and then get up and do it all over again." In addition, the stickers, with their barely discernable graphics indicating where the fruit was grown, act as geographic markers mapping the journey of produce from point of origin to consumer. As Francine Koslow Miller states in writing about Welty's work in the spring 2007 show at The Drawing Center, New York, "
Rachel Perry Welty's fruit-sticker drawings mix Minimalist aesthetics with Pop humor and homespun craft...to make aesthetically elegant and often beautiful images. Hers is a well-informed merging of geometric abstraction with the readymade, balanced by a concern for the sociopolitical nature of consumption." (Drawing Papers 67, 2007)
Welty's work has been shown at The Drawing Center, NY, the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and the Krannert Art Museum. Examples of her work are held in the collections of the Massachussetts Institute of Technology, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston.
