The
Yancey Richardson Gallery is pleased to present
Christian Patterson Sound Affects, an exhibition of photographs that use vibrant color to explore the vernacular of southern lifestyle and popular culture. Taken in Memphis, Tennessee, Patterson’s photographs present a city where romanticism and a rich musical past bump up against the banality of ordinary American life.
Sound Affects is comprised of still lifes, interior and exterior views that reveal an influence of earlier American color photographers Stephen Shore and William Eggleston. Many of Patterson’s images take light as their subject, ranging from the rainbow-colored illumination of a fluorescent tube to strings of softly glowing Christmas lights to a naked white light bulb in a Pepto-Bismol pink bathroom or the hypnotic blue flames of a gas range.
Patterson is currently working on Out There, a photographic project about Charles Starkweather and his fourteen-year old girlfriend, the 1950s Nebraska serial killers whose story of random violence inspired the movie Badlands. A self- taught photographer, Patterson was featured in the Photo District News 2004 feature “30 under 30” and on the cover of the 2005 Res New Talent issue. Patterson has exhibited both nationally and internationally. His work is in the collections of the New Orleans Museum of Art and the Ogden Museum of Southern Art. A native of Wisconsin, Patterson lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.
