Night Feed
May 12, 2006- June 17, 2006
550 W 21st St
Yvon Lambert New York is pleased to announce Night Feed, an exhibition of new works by
Jenny Holzer presented in collaboration with Cheim & Read. For a decade, light projections
have been a critical component of Holzer's artistic practice, and her exhibition at Yvon
Lambert New York will be the first comprehensive presentation of images that are the lasting
art and record of these temporary events that have been staged worldwide. The pigment
prints on view feature projections of Holzer’s own signature texts, the poems of others,
archival documents, and declassified and other sensitive United States government material.
The exhibition coincides with Holzer's show of oil on linen paintings of declassified
government documents at Cheim & Read Gallery. The exhibition will be on view May 12
to June 17, 2006. Yvon Lambert New York is located at 564 West 25th Street, New
York, NY 10001, and is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 am-6 pm. Cheim &
Read is located 547 West 25th Street.
The projections of Holzer’s signature texts and the poetry of others are similar to credits
scrolling at the end of a film. The medium allows the artist to work demonstratively with the
ephemeral. Holzer involves the cityscape and surrounding architecture in her work, and
includes spaces, people, and time in an affirming gesture. The black and white pigment
prints on view, which are the result of her longstanding, working relationship with
photographer Attilio Maranzano, suspend the tension of the passing moment and carry the
beauty of experience within the frame.
Holzer has said, "I show what I can with words in light and motion in a chosen place, and
when I envelop the time needed, the space around, the noise, smells, the people looking at
one another and everything before them, I have given what I know." Holzer's projections
have taken place in three continents, and over ten countries, including Argentina, Austria,
Brazil, France, Germany, Italy, Mexico, and the United States, and nearly twenty cities
including New York City, Florence, Rome, Rio de Janeiro, Venice, Berlin, and Paris.
For more than twenty-five years, Jenny Holzer has presented her astringent ideas,
arguments, and sorrows in public places and international exhibitions, including the Venice
Biennale, the Reichstag, and the Guggenheim Museums in New York and Bilbao. Her
medium, whether formulated as a t-shirt, as a plaque, or as an LED sign, is writing, and the
public dimension is integral to the delivery of her work. Starting in the late 1970s with the
New York City posters, and up to her recent projections on landscape and architecture, her
practice has rivaled ignorance and violence with humor, kindness, and moral courage. Holzer
received the Leone d'Oro at the Venice Biennale in 1990 and the Public Art Network Award
in 2004. She holds honorary degrees from The New School, the Rhode Island School of
Design, Williams College, and Ohio University. The artist lives and works in Hoosick, New
York.
Art Reviews of Night Feed
New York Times June 9, 2006 | | Roberta Smith | | "...Now, in very different gallery shows, Ms. Holzer concentrates on other people's words and modes of presentation that feel familiar, if not a little tired. At Lambert, large color photographs document public pieces in which the words of an assortment of contemporary poets were projected on imposing public buildings, including the New York Public Library. ..." |
