Stuart Hawkins
Welcome Drink (2006)
Zach Feuer Gallery (LFL) is pleased to present an exhibition of video and photographs by New York and Nepal based artist Stuart Hawkins.

Setting out on a journey in search of the anthropologically perfect native, Hawkins appears in her video piece "Souvenir." Enduring hardship and glory as her tourist character takes to the trail, she eventually discovers a clue that might uncover an indigenous being untouched by the modern world. However, the more she seeks out notions of pure cultural authenticity, the more they diminish with each grasp.

In her latest photographic series, "Customs," Hawkins again takes a look at the relationship between the foreigner and native, underscoring certain behaviors as they pertain to global capitalism and ethnicity. Stepping out from behind the camera, she becomes the idealized Westerner examined in her own work. As several Nepali people direct and shoot these photographic tableaux, passersby enter into the frame and contribute unscripted responses to Hawkins' presence. The interaction of the different participants calls into question power dynamics between the First and Third World.

The book "Stuart Hawkins: Blue Eyes" will accompany the exhibition, featuring an introduction by Joel Sternfeld and color reproductions of Hawkins' work from 2001 to 2006.

Stuart Hawkins was born in 1969 in Norfolk, VA, and lives and works in New York, NY and Nepal. Hawkins has exhibited at the Frye Art Museum, Seattle, Lincoln Center, New York, Peres Projects, Los Angeles, and Artists Space, New York. Her work has been featured in Flash Art, Artforum online, and The New York Times. This is her second solo exhibition with Zach Feuer Gallery (LFL).

Village Voice

Jerry Saltz"Welcome Drink, one of Stuart Hawkins's photographic scenarios of herself (she's female, despite the first name) in Nepal, is such a perfect metaphor for America's current adventures around the world that it should be made into a billboard and displayed outside all of our embassies...."
New York Times

Roberta Smith"...It shows Ms. Hawkins ransacking the countryside for a native untouched by outside influences, while the locals act as guides, stagehands and break dancers and, in subtitles, poke fun at her. There’s nothing like absurdity that has the ring of truth...."

Katya Kazakina"The August lull is upon Chelsea, where many galleries are closing for the rest of the month. But Zach Feuer, 28, who shuttered his space for a two-month redesign, has reopened with a spunky video and photography show by Stuart Hawkins. The exhibition is a welcome reprieve from summer's ubiquitous group shows. It also offers some quirks. ..."
