25 new drawings, a separate suite of works on antique paper, and a view of the artist’s sketchbooks comprise
Jeff Ladouceur’s second New York solo exhibition entitled Idiot Wind. The artist’s distinctive mix of melancholy and humor makes the new works as devastating and enchanting as ever. His fine lines recede in infinite minutia, offset by the artist’s smudged erasures and intentional pentimenti thinly veiled under layers of white wash.
Ladouceur’s familiar figures, such as cascading tiny elephants and a bulbous race of cloud people, find themselves in tragic new quandaries, and the fantastical scenarios are ever intimate and compelling. About his work, the artist has said: “I’m not making a comment; it’s more like an emotional snapshot, little scenes. It’s just coming from the back of my head to my fingers, and then at times, there is an idea or disjointed narrative, but that’s open to interpretation. I keep mine to myself.” (Juxtapoz Magazine, Spring 2005).
Since his last
ZieherSmith showing, Ladouceur’s works have been in solo exhibitions at Richard Heller, Los Angeles, and Galerie Georges-Philippe & Nathalie Vallois, Paris, as well as most recently in group shows including Tim Barber’s Tiny Vices at Spencer Brownstone, New York and Paul Butler’s Collage Party at
ZieherSmith. Recent press includes articles and images in Harper’s Magazine, Border Crossings, The Walrus, Juxtapoz Magazine and others.
