I was privileged to attend the opening of Antoine's exhibition in Melbourne. Knowing many of the subjects of his paintings, I found he had captured aspects of their personality and looks. However, each of his works conveyed a mood that transcended individual portraiture. In speaking with him and listening to him discussing his work, I've developed an appreciation of Antoine's ability to consider the essential qualities of masculinity and present this for the viewer to interpret in their own context.
