...Ahmet Ertug, who led the project, turned for the text to the French scholar in Byzantine art Catherine Jolivet-Lévy. An architect by training, Ertug became possessed over the years with a triple passion for photography, the Byzantine and Ottoman heritage of his home town Istanbul, and art books.
In 1978, he set up a one-man publishing outfit and in the next few years produced eight books in which the idea, the photography and the layout were all his own. Ertug approached the visual aspect of each volume as a whole, much as an architect deals with a monument. Photography was of the highest order but so were too the quality of the paper, the reproduction and the typography.... |
