Born in 1969, Cariya, a free-thinking individual, grew up absorbing the spirit reflected in the music and philosophies of the '60s and '70s. Extensive travel all over the world and a visual way of perceiving her surroundings drew her naturally to expressing herself in paintings and installations.
Having studied and re-interpreted major movements and artists of the 20th century, her art spans a wide variety of techniques, color types, materials and themes, combining different schools of thought and philosophies translated and updated into reality through post-historical painting. She utilizes her wide range of academic education (e.g. a doctoral degree in sociology for a dissertation on a comparison of Indian and US-American culture) and professional backgrounds to combine insights from different fields into a visual language to communicate thoughts and learnings to the viewer in a time of constant change and movement on a variety of levels. Her exhibitions and projects are shown and scheduled to be shown in locations all over the world, for example New York, Los Angeles, Hong Kong, Mumbai and cities in Italy, and her pieces of art are present in private collections on three continents. She is currently represented by Agora Gallery and Amsterdam Whitney Gallery in New York. She is also one of the winners of the prestigious Chelsea Global Showcase 2006 Competition. Cariya lives with her husband Jason and their two cats Leo and Tiger in New York City. She can be contacted at info@CariyaArt.com about the art: Utilizing an extensive range of materials, colors and styles to communicate her thoughts and ideas, Cariya’s art spans a wide genre, crossing artistic boundaries and their limitations. Influenced by research on movements and schools particularly originating in the last century, such as Abstract Expressionism, Conceptual Art, Kinetic Art, Color-field Painting as well as Op Art, Cariya has reinterpreted and utilized the influences of a wide variety of styles in her contemporary styles of painting. As such, her work cannot be strictly identified and related to any one of these schools, but while researching the meaning of many, she goes beyond the limitations of pre-set forms of expression and combines and rearranges parts of the former movements’ languages to communicate her own unique post-historic vision. The artist thus breaks down pre-set perceptions of boundaries – physically as well as psychologically – to combine thoughts that produce unification of concepts and ideas on a new plane. Change in this context is a constant and a necessary aspect of expressing the full meaning of her work. Each piece has its own intrinsic meaning that provides the framework for its full context, however, ultimately, it is left open to the individual interpretation of the viewer. | |
