Museu Nacional da República in Brasília, Brazil | Posted: 2007-08-16 |
We are pleased to announce that an exhibition of the work of Jay Milder is currently on display at the Museu Nacional da República in Brasília, Brazil, and will be up through September 2007.
Jay Milder is considered by the critics [to be] one of the six major North American figurative expressionists and one of the disseminators of animistic expressionism. Milder was one of the founders of the Rhino Horn Art movement in 1967 which was a major influence on the 80’s figurative expressionism. Jean Michel Basquiat, a friend of Jay’s daughter, Rifka, was familiar with Milder’s work. Robert C. Morgan, well known art critic mentioned that Basquait was influenced by the Rhino Horn movement, especially Bob Thompson and Jay Milder. Coming from the gestural painting, his work discloses an ecological concept that opposes itself to the western construction of fragmentation. His spiritual research reveals not only the intuitive application of rhythmic order, but also experimentation with elements and materials; and the cabalistic geometry is used by the artist as a mathematical system and a structural and alchemical reference as well. In the 1990’s and 2000’s his work was admired as retrospective shows in the international museums of Brazil. These included the Museum of Modern Art of Rio De Janeiro and the National Museum of Fine Arts in Rio De Janeiro and the Museum of Modern Art, Salvador, Bahia, Brazil. There have also been one person shows in Lohin Geduld Gallery, NYC; Alitosh Kebede Gallery, Los Angeles, CA; Girgis and Klym Gallery, Melbourn, Australia. This exhibition focuses on the evolution of his figurative animism in the 1960’s to the 1980’s to the vivid colors and the kabalistic numerology of his present work. The paintings are based on a philosophical thinking and a circular space, and an analogical perspective and geometric forms that compose chakras (fluxes of cosmic energy), which can cure the spirit through placement and quality and quantity of colors. --Dinah P.
