JLSR is a new york educated artist raised and residing in Mexico City. Always with a passion for drawing he was influenced by German expressionists for the clarity of their line and the darkness of their vision. Painting as religion, as a force of life in the work of Quatrocento and Renaissance masters also took its toll.
What was a skilled artist to do in swimming the muddy and turbulent waters of the Mexican Art seen in the 90's?
After seeing a documentry on Crump a new idea occured of returning back to drawing and getting down and dirty. He looked out the studio walls and brought home the noise and squalor of Mexico city. Everything became usuable, anything could be discarded. The sleep of reason produced monsters.
The 21st century seems to be coming in as the age of hopelessness and destruction. Anakin becomes Darth Vader , he burns up only to wear that really cool black suit. Where in ages past Titian would ravish us with beautty, Sanchez Rull has ravishes out from the dark side of the life and spits it back as a cautionary tale, to be peered between parted fingers, until the nasty parts reveal a compelling narrative, on the moment we are surviving through. |
