"I worked alongside Lee Tribe in 1969 when we were working as ship repairers in Tilbury Docks. Lee was a 'plater', which required a lot of welding, and cutting of steel plates - a good apprenticeship. Always a sophisticated man but with a common touch, he was well known and liked in the local area which was predominantly working-class . At the same time a man who kept his own counsel, I only discovered recently his lifelong commitment to creating art although' I must have known him after he left Birmingham School of Art. I last saw him in 1977, when I gave him and his friend a ride home in my citroen 2CV."
