We are very pleased to announce that gallery artist, Sarah Anne Johnson has been chosen the winner of the inaugural Grange Prize for Contemporary Photography. Johnson, a Winnipeg native, prevailed over the other four photographers to take the $50,000 award sponsored by the Art Gallery of Ontario and Aeroplan.
Johnson was competing with three finalists from China and another from Canada and received 53% of the 2,700 online votes for work chosen from her Tree Planting series. She was awarded the Grange Prize at a ceremony in Toronto Thursday evening and the Art Gallery of Ontario will display her work in the spring of 2009. This award follows on the tail of a $20,000 grant she received last month from the Manitoba Arts Council, and the recent acquisition of the "Galapagos Project" installation by The Museum of Contemporary Photography in Ottawa, a corollary of the National Museum Canada.
