A calming simplicity permeates the work of Xavier Mesa. The human condition is his subject matter and he expresses it with a painting style similar to that of a poem or parable. His representational imagery stays short and to the point with an economy of details, yet he manages to give each component stoic beauty. Literal human forms with their essential characteristics are central to most of his work. The surrounding imaginary world serves as a reference point for the painting’s mood, emotion, or desired thought, but has little to do with real objects or an actual location. Mesa often integrates flat graphic shapes with patterns into the piece and juxtaposes them with rendered images to create a dichotomy of spaces within the painting. His simplistic style suggests the filtered memories of nostalgia where emotion and feeling subjugate detail and reality. Mesa began by studying philosophy at la Universidad Iberoamericana before finding his calling in art. He has studied drawing and painting both in Mexico and Spain. Mesa continues to live and work in Mexico, his country of origin. |
